Pre-launch checklist

Prototype to production checklist: 25 checks before launch

A prototype built with an AI tool, by a freelancer or left by an agency is ready for real users when it passes 25 checks in six areas: login, data, deployment, quality, operations and ownership. Checks 1, 2, 6 and 22 are mandatory either way. Tick them below; it takes an hour, even without a developer.

What you fill in and tick stays in this browser window only. We do not store or send anything. It is gone when you close the page, so print your result.

For founders who have a prototype and are about to put it in front of real users or customers. It takes an hour, even without a developer. Where you can't answer, you have a question for whoever built the app.

Vibe coding gets you a prototype. We build software that runs a business. Since 2023 we have delivered 15+ production projects. We use this list on every takeover.

A missing item isn't a reason to rewrite. It's a to-do list.

A. Login, permissions and secrets

B. Data

C. Deployment and environments

D. Quality

E. Operations

F. Ownership and accounts

Why monitoring is on the list

Because whatever runs unwatched will one day quietly stop. It happened to us too: on a project for a client with an online marketplace, a background job quietly stopped and nobody noticed until traffic dropped on a chart.

What was missing was one alert that would have reported the outage that day. That's why items 18 to 20 are mandatory, not a bonus.

Scoring

Count the ticked items. But look at items 1, 2, 6 and 22 first. If even one of them is missing, fix it before launch, whatever the score.

StateVerdictWhat it means
The base holds, tests check something, deployment is repeatableContinueKeep building features and fill in the missing items along the way
The app works, but security, tests or monitoring are missingHardenFix those first, then new features
Fixes would take longer than a new versionStart overThe prototype stays as the brief; the code is rewritten

The most common outcome isn't a rewrite. It's a few security fixes, a working deployment and then normal work. You can only say so honestly after looking at the code.

Even with a rewrite, the prototype stays. It shows how the product should work better than any specification.

What to prepare before the conversation

  1. access to the repository or an export of the project from the AI tool,
  2. who uses the app today and for what,
  3. this list, with the items you weren't sure about marked.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my prototype is ready for production?
Go through the 25 checks below. If access control is missing (check 1), passwords are in the code (2), backups do not run (6) or the repository is not in your company’s name (22), fix that before launch, whatever the score.
Does a vibe-coded app need a rewrite?
Usually not. The most common outcome is a few security fixes, a working deployment and then normal work. A rewrite pays off when fixing would take longer than a new version. You can only say so honestly after looking at the code.
Can I do the checklist without a developer?
Yes. Where you cannot answer, you have a question for whoever wrote the app. A missing item is not a reason to rewrite, it is a work list.
Why is monitoring on the list?
Because whatever runs unwatched will one day quietly stop. An alert should report the outage the same day, not a customer or a dip in a chart weeks later.
